Party balloons add a lot of life to a party and need not cost a lot of money. The balloons themselves are usually very inexpensive, but they can be made up into colourful and imposing displays and may add a grandiose dimension with little more than a lot of air.

You might want to start off an outdoor party with a balloon drop. This consists of a big number of balloons suspended above the venue, which are released and then floats down onto the target (or partygoers) below. These balloons should be filled with normal air, to enable them to drop. Helium balloons may be used when balloons are required to float in the air. Helium balloons may not be ideal for outdoor parties, unless properly secured. They may float off and become undesirable litter when they lose their buoyancy and land somewhere far away.

However, helium balloons are ideal for creating large, floating structures like columns, arches or recreations of logos, giants or balloon clouds. For large helium displays, a helium inflator is used. Even when the balloons are only filled with air, it would be almost impossible to inflate them all by mouth, so the help of an inflator is usually required, especially for very large, customised balloons.

Multi-coloured balloon clusters filled with helium may be affixed at each table at a party, and a large balloon arch may be erected at the entrance to welcome the guests. In the case of a birthday party, party balloons can be made up to form the age of the person having the birthday.

Clever use of party balloons can add a lot of visual impact to a party and create a festive atmosphere at a surprisingly low capital outlay. Balloons are colourful and extrovert, yet cost very little to buy; therefore, they provide a modest expense that is easy to justify.
