Today, popcorn machines are most commonly found in pubic places where popcorn is sold, like movie theatres. These large popcorn machines are designed to pop a lot of popcorn and are usually the oil-popping type, using hot oil to pop the kernels. Oil-popped popcorn has more flavour, but about half of their calorie count is derived from fat.

Popcorn machines may also be of the hot air variety; popcorn popped by hot air derives almost none of its calories from fat, but also has less flavour. Movie theatres almost never make use of this type, because they aim to achieve the best tasting popcorn possible.

There are other means of popping popcorn as well, like microwaving special microwave popcorn. Microwave popcorn is oil-popped as well, which means a higher fat content.

Other than the normal salted popcorn, some popcorn machines are designed to make caramel popcorn, flavoured popcorn or kettle popcorn. Kettle corn is slightly sweet as well as slightly salty and conversion kits are sometimes available to convert normal electric popcorn machines into kettle corn machines. Some manufacturers supply a kettle corn mix that pops cleanly, so that the machine does not have to be cleaned very frequently.

A variety of different popping oils are available for use in popcorn machines, all of which lends a certain flavour and colour to the popcorn. Uncoloured or clear oil renders white popcorn. Butter-flavoured coconut oil has been found to make very tasty popcorn.

Popcorn machines vary in size and capacity and the average movie theatre popcorn machine may be classified as a 170 gram machine, or six ounces, in American parlance. Some popcorn machines may be rated to pop more than 500 grams of popcorn at a time.
